Abstract

Results and trends in strawberry breeding and the release of new varieties are reported, based on the international literature. In the last 20 years, strawberry breeding activity led to the commercial introduction of 463 new cultivars from 35 different countries, by 79 public agencies and 32 private companies. Day-neutral varieties represent only 17% of all new cultivars. Breeding objectives and methods, using either traditional approaches or with the contribution of biotechnology strategies (genetic transformation, marker-assisted selection, etc.), and perspectives are discussed. © ISHS.
